Re: [RC] Nervous or Crazy - Barbara McCrary

Very wise words, and ones I am working hard to believe. I am a pathologically cautious person...always have been. I've probably missed a lot in life, but also I haven't had any near-death experiences, either. The older I get, the less fearful I become.

** Low Priority **

In another incarnation, I did hang gliding, lots of hang gliding, often soaring for hours more than a mile above the earth. It was during that period of my life that I came to understand that fear is our most misunderstood emotion. Fear, I came to understand, is what keeps us from doing something really stupid and killing ourselves. Indeed, it was while climbing in great lazy circles up the side of a cliff when I didn't feel some degree of fear that I got scared, realizing that I could lull myself into some situation that I couldn't get out of. So, I came to embrace fear as a life-saver. In other words, don't fear the fact that you feel fear. Welcome that feeling. The trick is to manage it. Welcome it because it will keep you concentrating on the task at hand, but don't let it overwhelm you so that you have difficulty doing the things that need to be done. For example, while I'm riding on that steep-sided narrow trail, instead of imagining all the things that might go wrong, i.e. the horse spooking and taking a false step, I focus on how sure-footed horses in general are, the fact that horses have four legs so that if one goes astray the others can correct, and how my horse has an instinct for self-survival at least as strong as my own and that I can trust him to do the right, the smart, thing. If I focus on the fear, however, the horse will feel that and I put both of us in jeopardy. So don't worry that you feel fear. We all do. Just learn how to handle it.

Hey Bruce, look familiar? Here is a link of photos of Pucker Point. Yes, I
was "crazy" enough to have my camera out as we rode over this section of
trail. Click link below, then over on the right, click next for the series
of the next 5 photos of the trail.
