[RC] Nervous or Crazy - Bruce Weary DC

Hi Jen--
Any good endurance rider with common sense has been nervous, tense, or scared at some time or another. If not, they're crazy. There are simply too many potentially dangerous aspects to our sport for anyone to never experience these feelings. They are necessary emotions, and a part of our own survival mechanism. We ride powerful, fit, and at times emotional animals that weigh 1000 pounds, and have their own survival instincts, that can be dangerous when acted upon. We ride them often over unfamiliar terrain that contain holes, roots, and rocks that can cause harm to both horse and rider. There is a famous place on the Tevis trail known affectionately as "Pucker Point," and it ain't a place for kissin'.
So yes, this sport's participants are very familiar with fear and trepidation. We'd be crazy not to. I believe in being prepared, though. Know your horse, get him accustomed to scary things, and control the variables as best you can. The unexpected will still happen. And when it does, that's why I always carry an extra pair of underwear to change into. Dr Q, world renowned fearful person
