My mustangs are all barefoot and rarely even need trims. In the spring and 
fall, when their hooves grow faster, my farrier nips off the rough edges and 
balances them, but other than that he just rasps the edges and smooths off 
the toe a bit. They've never had anything done to their soles and they can 
go down gravel roads and across rocky creekbeds like nobody's business. 
Guess I'm just lucky! <G>
