When we went to France in the late '80's, we rode for 2 weeks. The saddle blanket was exactly that. A 100% wool blanket (like an old army blanket). Each day we would refold the blanket so that a clean side was against the horse. It really worked well and I have always thought about buying a wool army blanket every time I pass one of those army outlet stores.
