Uncanny. They were barefoot, and we've been bordering on drought conditions with the exception of these rare deluges and fierce storms.

The biggest mare out there was uninjured. No doubt she was close by. The 2 mares are half sisters and companions besides. That big mare had shoes on. The only difference here is that they were under a tree. Heavy foot prints lead away from the tree but none to it. We gather that they were simply standing there. It was next to the fence but as of right now there is no damage to the tree or fence. No scorching on animal or tree.

Thank you for these little bits of info. I'd like to gleam as much info as I can.

When our horses were struck, they were about 50 feet from our hay barn and not under trees, nor in the middle of a field, nor next to a fence.  Why those three out of the herd?  The only thing we could come up with was they were the shortest and fattest.  They were also barefoot.  It was also very dry..no rain before the storm, so they could have been the biggest water source to conduct the charge. 

 

Amy, was it dry when they were hit?
