Re: [RC] [RC] unregistered pure-breds - Jessica Cameron

It seems to me that too many people rely on "bloodlines" as being a good determination of endurance performance. My dad had a registered 1/2 arab who was 7/8 arab, 1/8 welsh pony and 15.2 h. If you just looked at his bloodlines you would never even consider him for endurance, but 2200 endurance miles later and a National 5th place middle-weight finish obviously proved that bloodlines are not the biggest determining factor. For those who like to look at performance his name is Rikki Tikki and was ridden by Richard Cameron.

My horse is unregistered, at least to my knowledge, I bought him from an unexperienced horse person who really didn't know what he had and/or didn't know what to do with him. I could care less what his bloodlines were, he's 15.2, has tremendous bone (8 3/4 cannon's) great feet, and absolutley loves to go down the trail. I don't think it's really appropriate to encourage newbies to rely so heavily on bloodlines for determining if a horse is going to be good at endurance. IMO, have an experienced endurance individual that you trust go with you when you look at a prospect. If your looking for papers, than by all means go for it, but if you are looking for a partner who will carry you down the trail and you will bond and grow with, don't let the fact that he or she doesn't have papers, keep you from making the decision.

Papers on a gelding also represent his bloodlines, which may indicate whether he will be good, or great, at endurance.

It's true a gelding can't breed on, but I think that registering a gelding is proof that the horse is cared for, respected and honored. Think of all the arabian geldings that have done well in endurance. If they are registered, their achievements can contribute to the breed history and speak to the quality of their bloodlines and to the expertise of their breeders.

Amen to that and the AHA is an a guilty party in this who sorted mess. With the current process of DNA testing anyone that buys an Arabian and can prove it by DNA should be able to register it independent if they "bought the papers" or not.

Of course for a gelding I could never figure out why anyone cared.

Selling a horse without them is a kind of blackmail in my opinion and the one who suffers is the horse because it cannot be sold for it's true value.
