[RC] Arabs vs non-arabs - Lynn White

I have been enjoying all the discussion on arabs vs
non-arabs in endurance. It is kind of funny that
there is this very same discussion on my Akhal-Teke
(AT) e-list, only it's Arabs vs Tekes. I like to
think of AT's and Barbs as the "other" dessert breeds.
Unfortunatley, there are not a lot of either to go
around. Many Teke owners love their temperment and
loyalty. Many also say that Tekes are more level
headed and don't seem to have the "cougar" imagination
generally present in Arabs. AT's originated in the
rocky desert north of mountains of Iran. They are
known for their incredible bone density, speed,
endurance, and loyalty to their person. Teke's are
also very smooth to ride. If you ever see one move
you will note that they move like a gazelle. So there
really isn't one desert breed after all. If you are
ever lucky enough to see an AT on a ride, make sure
that you watch the horse move. Hopefully some day my
grade mare will produce a half Teke for me!
