Re: [RC] Horses and climate adjustments - rdcarrie

We live and ride in hot, humid, flat East Texas, which is about 350 feet in elevation.  Temps during the summer here are in the mid-upper 90s, sometimes around 100 or so.  Humidity is like living in someone's armpit.  :-p  We go out to New Mexico every July to the Fort Stanton ride...our little vacation away from the sauna.  :)  Randy Eiland can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the elevation is around 6500-7000 feet or so, perhaps a little more?

In NM, our horses tend to work at slightly higher heart rates, even when trotting on level ground, due to the increased elevation.  However, they pulse down *faster* than immediately (<G>) due to the low humidity (which is generally in single digits or the low teens).  Out there, sweat actually does what it's supposed to do (results in evaporative cooling).  What a concept...LOL.

Subject: [RC] Horses and climate adjustments

I've been reading with interest the comments about how fast horses adjust to heat and humidity. But don't forget that altitude changes are also a factor in a horse's athletic performance. Granted, I'm an endurance newbie, but I have a degree in agriculture (emphasis animal science and biology). We were taught that changes in altitude can have a greater effect on horses than simple temperature changes. What do you think?? Has anyone noticed this, or is this an example of a "fact" that doesn't apply in the real world??
Curious,
Jen
