RE: Horse BP was Re: [RC] Silly Question - Libby & Quentin Llop DVM

Michigan state did a study at the Wolverine ride last year where they took  the blood pressure of the horses before, midway, at the finish and the next morning. I haven't heard anything about their conclusions yet.  Libby

Tom,

Blood pressure can be taken around their tail using a pediatric blood pressure cuff.  I'm uncertain what value it would provide at a ride when looking at recovery since BP is volatile based on activity around the animal, adrenaline, etc.  I'm uncertain of any studies that link it with recovery from physical exertion.

Taking BP on a horse is a more skilled task and would likely have to be done by the vets rather than volunteers.

Subject: [RC] Silly Question

Knowing that horses have stress and can develop ulcers,  and stress in people can elevate blood pressure, my question is:  Is there a means to calculate blood pressure in horses? and could that have some informative value that could be utilized along w/ pulse readings?  ts
