RE: [RC] Ulcer Treatments - stephteeterQuick note on ulcers/treatment. One of the vets at our clinic was on the original research team that worked for Gastroguard (omeprazole). I have been riding a horse that I suspected might have ulcers. I talked to him about treatment, conditions, etc. I asked him if the condition would eventually resolve - the ulcers heal - if the stress conditions were removed. (i.e. travel, competition). He said yes, the gastric lining can heal on it's own, the best situation for healing would be to have the horse on free choice pasture - or 24/7 forage - for at least a month. And then if/when you put the horse back into work/competition (or stress) use Ulcerguard (1/4 dose omeprazole)for the week of transition, and/or regular use for prevention of re-ulceration. The biggest advantage to scoping to me would getting a definitive diagnosis and seeing the extent of the damage so if you recheck later you can see how she's responding to treatment. I know this has been discussed alot, but could y'all share some treatments (natural and regular medicine). Are there any advantages/disadvantages to scoping or not? It's quite a chunk of change in my area. Also, I'm looking for Alfalfa hay in the Piedmont of NC. Pure Alfalfa for the ulcer mare. If anyone knows of anything... Thanks!
