Re: [RC] Red Bag! - Bette Lamore

The weird thing with my "red bag" was that the bubble showed first -- no red-- then the nose coming with the bubble-- again everything looked normal yet Mark knew to break the bag and it was a lot tougher than the normal bag -- then he tried to pull with the contractions to no avail and the mare got up to reposition several times and laid back down finally popping the foal out. When the placenta came out immediately following the foal, it was really dark yet the mare's butt was not really bloody like the picture on my web site. Mark said that when he broke the bag, he felt the foal was gone already. No tone. I guess there are variations on the red bag.
So sad.....

It is fairly easy to tell if the placenta is presenting first, as I learned one morning at 3 a.m. when my barn manager
called me and said, something was wrong, "come quickly"! I am in my sixties, but knew immediately
what it was, yelled for scissors, and began cutting. It was like cutting into a very, thick steak. I cut through,
felt for nose and feet and by then more help had arrived. It was difficult delivery, but the foal was just fine!
I will never know how I had the courage to do what I had to do, as I can't even look at one of my horses
when it is injured.
This is where the caution comes in! A few years later, a first time mare, began delivering in the field, at about
2 p.m. This time I was called and the bubble was red, quite pronounced and protruding about 8 inches. But
when I touched it, it was soft, like tissue. The vet arrived and it was the bladder coming first! The vet got the mare
up, let her lie down luckily on a hill with her head down, and was able to reposition and gently pushed it in place.
Foal then arrived with normal position.

With red bag you will know it, and you have about a minute to cut through the placenta!
