[RC] re: build a 100 mile horse & "gaited newbe" - Cindy Collins

Thank goodness for shame...it's kept me from making stupid mistakes with
my horses a SECOND TIME! If y'all wonder why some of us have negative
reactions to LD...this gentleman personifies all of our fears and
prejudices. It just happens that he is typical of what I often hear and
have often seen. If folks had to start out on 100s like the old days,
they'd be a bit more realistic of necessity. Now, that is NOT to say that
I hate all LD riders, etc....It's just to say that for every one of you
out there who is sensible and trying to learn the sport and start out
sanely in LD, there are about 10 like him that I run into in my area. I'm
very sorry that you guys get his mud splashed on you...so to speak. Just
use this conversation to try to be understanding of how some feel about
LD. And, I'll try to be more open minded about those of you who are NOT
represented by this gentleman (and I use that term loosely).

As to building a 100 mile horse...forward attitude and heart will beat out
everything else. Sure, good feet, good legs, good withers, deep heart
girth, good PRs, are all important. But, how many times have we seen a
horse that just didn't look like anything special make a liar out of us
because of what's between his/her ears and inside his/her soul. You can't
quantify some things...thank goodness. Cindy
