[RC] Post Colic Surgery - Joe/Sabrina - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

My mare had colic surgery at 13 (involving the removal of 8
feet of large intestine and 3 weeks in the hospital, then
took up distance riding a year later and has been chugging
steadily along (and colic-free) ever since. She'll be 22
next month.

I wouldn't be very concerned about the surgery itself as it
sounds like the horse has healed fine - but you wouldn't want
to buy a horse prone to repeated colic bouts.

I would talk to the owner and try to determine the cause of
the colic. Was there an apparent cause such as he got
into the grain the night before? Did the horse have colic
bouts before or after the one that required surgery? If so,
can you identify management issues that might have caused
the colic (such as moldy hay,no turnout, frozen water all winter, poor or
non-existent worming program) that won't
be a problem at your barn?

Hi, I am going to look at a 7 yo MFT this weekend who had colic surgery last
year. According to the owner, he has had no complications and she is steadily
riding him. What do I look for? What do I ask her re this issue? Any
suggestions. Any comments? Thanks
Sabrina
