[RC] The benefits of Parelli........ - Christy Hawes

Thanks, all, (including Kristy & Diana) for the positive comments. Some people sent me private messages. It's like a coming out party for PNH supporters. Sometimes I want to hide the fact that I do Parelli; like hiding my "occult" status. I always wondered how many endurance people used it. When I go to shows I don't see people using it either - maybe they're behind their trailers secretly playing the seven games? LOL

20 years ago, my mom's top-10 Anglo mare, Wendy, use to run circles around her at the beginning of a ride while trying to mount - my dad would have to throw her aboard the moving target. All we saw after that was a trail of dust and mom had started the ride!

Sometimes she rode the first 15 miles double-bitted so she had SOME control. She rode in a Stonewall saddle, which made it easier to stay on as the horse liked to spook at rocks. She rode lots of 50's and 100's. I can remember Tevis, American River Ride, Drew Barner memorial for starters. I understand she was pretty scared the first 15 miles out on almost every ride until Wendy went into work mode. But heck, she would run & jump in the trailer, and loved to scream down the trail- an incredible athlete. My mom just pushed past the initial fear. Gosh, I never want to do that! Thank YOU Parelli. I wonder how many horses she tail-gated, bumped and would otherwise disturb because she had no control.

Anyway, I'm officially out of the closet.

Nice post Christy. I followed a similiar path as you.
Even though I don't agree with everything in the PNH
program, I give it credit for literally saving my
life. My bolting, 'dangerous' horse didn't need
training, "I" did!!! I wish more supposedly
'experienced' horse people would realize that about
themselves.

This is meant a bit tongue in cheek, so please, no one
get bent out of shape, but Christy's above description
should be pondered by lots of endurance riders. You
may not recognize yourself in the above paragraph, but
there ARE (gasp) endurance riders who stay alive on a
wing and a prayer when they mount. I give myself
credit for realizing that I was playing russian
roulette getting on an unpredictable unconfident
horse, and I did something about it and started over
on the ground with PNH. Many of us aggressively defend
PNH when someone makes a disparaging remark because it
made such a positive change in our (and our horses')
lives.
