In fact, some children with shunts wear helmets at play to protect 
the shunt 
placement.

The catcher on my daughter's high school softball team has hydracephalus
and has shunts. She wears her catcher's helmet & mask on defense and
batting helmet on offense. She plays in travel leagues over 100 games a
year and just got a scholarship to play in college. She's a pretty tough
kid, never complains. We advanced in the district tournament
tonight...she got her cast off her broken wrist Sat. and caught tonight.
