[RC] pet peeve/gates - rides2far

Angie, you must not live in cow country! Unless the RM can provide
gate
watchers, riders have to open and close their own.

Nope. Never had a single endurance trail pass through any pastured
cows...ever. But remember...our fields are lush, so an average cow field
might just be 20 acres. I know at the Man Against Horse in Arizona most
of the 50 mile ride was on one ranch so there's the difference. I do
think we probably have as much grass in 20 acres as they had on that
place though. >g<

Our trails tend to be in places that aren't fit to build homes. Around
here that means the sides of a mountain. We spend a LOT of time on rocky
mountainsides or National Forests (rocky but includes some mountain
top!). Million Pines is flat so it crosses lots of private property, but
that keeps getting leased out to "hunting clubs". A hunter pays something
like $100 to have an acre of his own to hunt. The rotten thing about that
is that hunting seasons seem to correspond with the best competition
weather. :-P So count your blessings...they don't hunt cows yet.

Angie
