That would be Doimas to a "T". He will be down and relaxed coming into the check, then when he sees all the horses and activity, his pulse zooms up. Same thing happens if his riding buddy disappears or when new horses so much as walk by. It can be a real pain to get him to calm down.

That's why the AERC needs to look at some hard cold numbers before any decisions are made on this. It might be that this type of rule only kicks in after 25 miles. My old mare would take longer at the first check (if it were less than 25 miles out) than any other check. She was still bouncing off the walls. She did get better with experience but a little of it was always present. After the first 25 miles - she would fly through the checks.
