[RC] Securing horses - Amy Cieri

After a horrific accident with my mare (caused by other loose horses) I also got out of using the electric pen, steel corral, etc. I use the Hi-Tie and have made a wood cover for my wheel wells. It attaches with double ended snaps to rings I mounted to the wheel wells. The wood panel extends to the ground and is secured in 3 spots. I also added rings to the sides of the trailer at a comfortable level for the horses, to attach my feed and water buckets. Hay is tied in a bag, high off the ground and at the furthest point that the horse can reach to keep the rope from going under the bag and catching. Nothing is on the ground.
I taught my current horse how to deal with a rope over her head and NEVER let her break a lead. Also, cantering back and forth on the tie won't get her a "get out of jail free" card. She needs to, and does, stand tied. Takes time and some guts on your part to help them through if they are rebels. A lot is trial and error on the horse's part. One thing that was of tremendous help was teaching her to follow the pressure of the rope. Please chime in all you natural horsemanship trainers!
So far so good with this method.  But... horses are horses.
