Re: [RC] My Bad - TypeF \(Jackie Floyd\)

I'm another one who has a short-legged little 14.1 pony and he finds it terribly difficult to trot with the big boys. And he has an incredibly easy canter, which we're developing. While I mostly trot Tank (he's not a fan of the canter), James seems MUCH more at ease, more comfortable and has lower heart rate at an easy little canter than he is/has at the same speed trot. Although he has gotten better at a bigger trot over the last two years, he's still much more relaxed and kicked back when he's doing a canter. So I have been doing a lot more walking because I'm traveling slightly faster at the canter than James normally does at the trot.

While riding with Karen Chaton at Eastern Mojave this year, I got my eyes opened to what a horse with a good canter can do. While Chief prefers the trot, Rocky is the pro at cantering and Zenos (Karen's other horse who I had the pleasure of riding that day) was not far behind. It was a different experience for me to do several hundred strides of cantering all at once.

However, I do think that horses that can canter endlessly are the exception to the rule.

:) Jackie

I stand corrected. The winner of the 2005 20 Mule Team 100, Crockett, did it in 9.5 mph. The second and third place horses did it in 8.3. Still, 9.5 is a brisk trot. Unless Crockett cantered and walked for an average speed of 9.5. And, as we all know, Crockett never walks. So there. Dr Q.
