[RC] Feeding Round Bales - Suzy Ticer

We prefer to feed round bales, more hay for the dollar (and we all know about the price of hay these days) . We put our round bales on pallets, and cover them with tarps that are tied securely. They do not get moldy, even in the Texas heat and humidity. We use heavy duty round tarps that my husband picked up years ago. These round tarps are usless for anything but covering round bales. We try to purchase at least 5 round bales in May and they do not molded even if covered until the next February.

We do not put the round bales in the pasture with the two horses. We use a pitchfork and unwind the hay and pitch it over the fence once or twice a day. After a couple of days, you learn how much to pitch so that the horses eat it all. If they don't eat it all, reduce the amount until they do. At all times recover the hay with a tarp. This is a little more work, but the horses don't stand around (possibly in mud) and get hay bellies. It is also part of my exercise program, along with moving 50 feed bags and the square bales we get for rides!

I'll be glad when they start cutting hay again in Texas and hopefully the prices with go back to what they were last spring! Affordable!!
