Re: [RC] itchy and scratchy - Lynne Glazer

I have super-itchy horses, and I'm structured, too. They're allowed to rub below my knee, but must "tell me" first so I can grab mane and plant my feet. Then they rub on my half chaps, which blocks feeling any of their hardware as well as keeping my tights cleaner.

I love Epona's "Ulta Mitt" to carry along, it's a scratchy glove that I put on at checks and let my boy rub his little heart out, mostly on his face. He has also learned to rub his forehead on my offered extended gloved hand as we're riding. During conditioning rides, I will usually accomodate his occasional need to rub his face on his own knee, they're "itch attacks" like my "nap attacks". <g>

Mine go in Zilco bridles over Pat Fredrickson's thin rope halters. I don't tie during rides, but prefer to clip to the halter's chin knot for extended walking or tailing. Once on a training ride on my mare, she managed to break her old bridle (and I don't remember how), and having the rope halter to attach the reins to proved quite handy, as we were on a cliffy course, and I was able to make the switch while still mounted to the amusement of the other humans.

Now I'm a little more structured. I insist they not rub until I offer. I
checked, and Kaboot's pulse actually goes *up* when he's scratching his
head so I make him stay at arm's length when the pulse takers are taking
his pulse. I'll bet that if I dealt with your horses for awhile I'd love
every minute of it...but when I've got on a good pair of gripper gloves
and can hold my hands up and let my horse just have a rub fest...I can't
resist. Just because yours don't scratch doesn't mean they don't itch.
g< I figure if I could put a really simple bridle on him that a little
less itching would be appreciated on his part.
