Re: [RC] Girthing vs Cinching - agilbxr

Yes, but you have never ridden Donkey.....  Donkey is an arab/quarter cross that got the arab barrell and the quarter width, combined with NO withers to speak of.  To top that off, he's almost 16 hands.  If you left the girth loose on him, you would have to mount from the top of the pickup truck so you put no uneven pressure on that saddle at all.  Otherwise, it'd roll.  As it is, we used a double elastic english girth with him, tightened it until WE couldn't breath anymore, a crupper AND a breastplate, and the darn thing would still roll on mounting.  This is how I learned to mount from the highest object out on trail, putting my horse in the nearest ditch, and jumping on REALLY fast.

I did learn balance on him though.  If you didn't sit straight, you'd end up off the side of him.  He really didn't care though....  It did get interesting when he teleported.  I swear he could jump out of that saddle.

Donkey is retired now, a 22 year old pasture pet living with a good friend of mine.  He foundered pretty badly about 3 years ago (insulin resistant), and is pasture sound.  He gets pampered and loved, and enjoys every minute of it.

Juli and the Herd
Alpine (i've been ridden twice now on the trail, and am still sound.  I wish mom would let me do more than walk though....)
Spot (I've been a brat since Alpine came home.  Mom keeps talking about jealous horses and spots on the brain)
Merlin (I like food) <---6 month old endurance horse in the making. he also drinks out of puddles. *grin*
