Or how about having large numbers of babies and children die before they 
ever have a chance at life?  That was very commonplace in days gone by.  The 
numbers of children that died from drinking milk from diseased cows after 
being weaned from their mothers was an issue.  Also diphtheria, smallpox, 
measles, mumps.....  Of course bubonic plague was also a popular way of 
keeping the population under control.
