Yep in the south in the summer kids used to eat salt. We started 
football practice in mid Aug (that was when school started after labor 
Day) and we practiced twice a day, 6:30 AM and 4:30 AM. The trainer gave 
us all salt tablets - back before the days of Gator Aid.
