Re: [RC] Study on electrolyte/ulcers; Now Colic? - Dabney Finch

And I've certainly never seen a horse colic after being given a dose of elytes!
Dabney responds:
I haven't either, but I did cause a tummy ache once (just not to the colic stage) from too much elyting.  I learned a valuable lesson, and am much more careful and conservative now with my e-lyting program (which, for the record, is just like Joe's.  I have loose salt available in the horses' paddocks and never e-lyte except in races.  If anyone wants to know why I'm so adamant about that, email me.)

Count yourself lucky.  I've seen too many to count, who, following a big
dose of e-lytes, have not only stopped eating but have in some cases
gone on to cramp and/or colic as a result.

No, I don't count myself lucky...I know plenty of other horses that aren't particularly bothered by being dosed with elytes.  I think maybe those whose horses go off their feed after a dose of elytes, rather than having the "take care of themselves" attitude to continue eating should count themselves as unlucky.
