Re: [RC] [RC] Long Haul - Wrap or no? - Juli Jakub

On the other side I always wrap. My filly managed to rear once and get her legs in the manger in front of her. The vet said if she had not been wrapped she probably would have sheared through her tendons and would have had to be put down. She had seen that happen before with the same accident. Instead she just got a cut on her head and now I use a head bumper too. I would rather be safe then sorry. You never know when something could get out of hand and that extra protection could help save the horse from serious injury. Just my two cents though.

I have never wrapped my horses. My daughter learned to do this when she was working at 'dressage' barn. HOWEVER, I still don't. Seems to me the horse should be able to take care of his hooves and legs on his own. I have ended up having to keep my horses in the trailer up to 4 days without getting out. They did fine. But then they are also kept in a pasture. Maybe the fancier and more costly horses have more accidents during the traveling process but then it may also depend on if you are willing to accept any scratches, etc. Not really sure if there is any studies on this. But if one has a HUGE investment, like 5 digits, it seems like a small investment.

Yrs ago, I knew someone who managed to get her horse from here in TX into the Tevis Cup but unfortunately he stepped on a nail and could not compete after he arrived there.

Sometimes we do things 'because' and not due to a real rationale. IMHO

FWIW, I haven't wrapped a horse's legs for a trip of any duration for many
years. I don't even use "shipping boots" any more. Oh, I sure wouldn't want
anyone wrapping that didn't know what they were doing. So my recommendation is
to leave the wraps off.
