[RC] OT - sane assessment of Avian influenza - Maryanne Gabbani

Having half a dozen parrots that live in a flight cage in my garden, and living where everyone and their brother has been in the habit of raising their own poultry, the issue has been important to me...even more so since the flu has been found in some flocks of chickens in Egypt and the army has been going around removing household flocks of birds. Most of what you read about bird flu is pretty incendiary and designed to enhance distribution of papers, but this bulletin from The American Council on Science and Health is excellent. It clearly lays out the issues and risks without trying to incite panic. They have a site for the download of a pdf version of the report (which can be ordered for $5 but isn't practical to order here) but I couldn't get the download to work.

Still, I'd recommend reading the report on the site. One of the things that it notes is that this is a viral infection of water fowl and not of birds in general. The WNV affected raptors (owls, hawks, eagles, and crows) in significant numbers but not many other birds as well. So we probably don't have to look at those robins and house sparrows with suspicion.
