One other interesting thing, I think horses are snobs!
Besides the "color" sorting, the working horses seemed to have a higher
status than the rest. If one of them joined the workers, or an unbroke
horse started under saddle, they moved up the pecking order.
Was a real lesson in "horse herd" social interaction.

I've noticed this too! Albeit on a much smaller scale. Scarlet is my QB and
my entire herd knows to keep out of her way. She's not an aggressive alpha,
just a "leave me alone, I'll leave you alone" type. So, she's always been
off by herself, never sharing a hay pile. Once those babies are weaned, she
doesn't want them anywhere near her. Then Chief, her oldest, got trained
and started riding the trails with us. Suddenly, I noticed that Chief could
doze near her during the day. Then, General joined the ranks of riding
horses. She quit being so mean to him as well. It really did seem as though
once a youngster earned her respect - ie. did the same work she did - they
moved up in her estimation. Pretty cool.
