FW: Re: [RC] [RC] re: mares and girls - Ginny Holsman

Actually, the cause of PMS in humans, and "marishness" in horses is quite similar -- it has to do with nutritional defitiencies that make it difficult for the person/horse to produce the correct amount of the correct hormones (these are manufactured, internally) at the righ time.

As an equine nutritionist, I have eliminated "marishness" in many horses, through changes in diet.

Healthy mares handle their heat cycle without distress or difficulty; only mares with health problems have difficulties that affect their disposition.

I'll bet you men out there are loving this conversation--maybe you all ought to go throw seed on the pasture for a moment....

Heidi, I know that female horses and female humans differ biologically; I am focusing on the similarities in behavior and mood, not on the underlying, completely dissimilar processes causing the discomfort. We still don't know why some women get PMS, and we still don't know why some mares get "mare-ish". Not knowing the cause doesn't mean that reality is nonexistent..... It may turn out we DO share something with equine females--but that doesn't matter particularly to my original point which wandered into a different pasture long ago....

I also don't have a problem with anthropomorphizing as long as it doesn't lead to misunderstandings such as, "that horse did that to piss me off...." Anthropomorphizing is an excellent way to relate to another species--the only way really. Just ask Temple Grandon (sp?).

Ciao!

I've a great deal of respect for your opinion because you know lots about lots, but I gotta' seriously disagree in this case. I've had both stallions and mares--and--perhaps I'm biased being a female and all--but the boys seem much less bothered by their hormones than many of the females.... My current mare is particularly bothered by her heat cycle, and I'd be willing to write her off as "pathological" if it weren't for the fact that many of my friends have mares just like her.

I meant what I said. Menstruation is the sloughing of the uterine
lining in between ovulations. Mares have no physiological process even akin to it. It is all too common to anthropomorphize and
pretend that horses do things the way we do and visa versa--but it
simply isn't the case.
