[RC] Horse Slaughter Prevention Act - Mattie AllenDear endurance riders and horse lovers, Horses are still being slaughtered for human consumption and our tax dollars are subsidizing this disgusting practice; there is no domestic demand for human consumption of horse meat, however the foreign market is quite large--last year, more than 90,000 American horses were either shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter, or slaughtered right here in the U.S. in one of 3 foreign-owned slaughterhouses. The horses are often shipped for 24 hour periods in horrifying conditions, where many break their legs and die of trampling and dehydration before they ever get to the slaughterhouse. Once at the slaughterhouse, the horses are repeatedly beaten and electrocuted, and often the horses are butchered while still conscious. The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915) would put an end to this cruel and inhumane practice by permanently prohibiting horse slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. Please contact your Senators to urge them to support this. A couple of months ago, the Agricultural Appropriations Bill included language for an amendment that would prohibit the use of tax dollars to promote horse slaughter; however, even after a landslide victory in both the House and Senate, the USDA is attempting to betray Congress and sidestep this law by working with overseas horse meat buyers to create a whole new way of paying for horse slaughter. S. 1915 would not only prevent the USDA from doing this, but it would also, but it would also ban horse slaughter altogether for human consumption and ban the shipment of horses to other countries for human consumption slaughter.
