[RC] trot/canter - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

Dot Wiggins' post has me replying to ask for further discussion. She wrote
that she found no difference between the HR at the canter and trot as long as
terrain etc didn't change. So far, in my learning about endurance riding, two
people have said trotting is easier on the horse, and one has said cantering
was easier. If Dot has actually recorded HRs at both gaits and finds no
difference, that is good information for me. My Morab has a huge driving trot
that he goes into as his speed increases - just before the canter. I have
been keeping him at the big trot as our conditioning increase in length
thinking it was better for him - but now am wondering--should I? With the
threads on high suspensory injuries occuring more with the big trot and if
cantering is just as easy on him - should I just let him move into the canter?
The other thing with him is that he prefers the tarred road to the grassy side
- if he can choose, he will pick to ride the road. Whats up with that?
Thanks,
DianeD, OK
