We have a 10,000 watt generator for just 
such 
occurrences.  It is big enough to power the whole house. 

My husband works for the power company here. Every year when there's an
ice storm they try to remind people that (and I don't understand exactly
how this works) if you plug your generator in without disconecting from
the main lines the power you create can go down the line and electrocute
a lineman who has cut the power from the main source. Just make sure
you're careful about that.
