[RC] Help for Herniated Discs -- lumbar - Ridecamp Guest

Would love to hear from anyone with experience in this area.  I have a friend 
(rider) who has a herniated disc in her back, very painful.  She's stopped 
riding....surgeon wanted to operate, but other docs say no. She's currently 
doing physical therapy, and considering an injection.  What 
therapy/medications/alternative therapies have folks found helpful for this 
situation?
