RE: [RC] trailering problems - Mcgann, BarbaraCathy, Try taking him for several truly long hauls (4 hours or more). A young horse especially learns to anticipate getting out on short rides and are impatient to do so. I think they think that their pawing causes you to stop and get them out. If you take him on several really long hauls, he will eventually wear out and decide to ride quietly. Make sure he has hay, a window he can see out, and is comfortable (stall long enough, etc), and then just keep going. It won't hurt him to sweat. We have a favorite riding spot that is about 20 minutes away, and I notice that even our seasoned endurance horses start to get impatient if we haul them there repeatedly. They just expect that we're going to get in, ride a few minutes, get out and do the fun stuff. It takes a longer haul to remind them that, "Oh, we might be in here for a while; might as well relax and eat my hay." However as soon as he gets in he begins to paw and kick. He continues this the whole time he's in the trailer. He's soaking wet by the time we arrive at our destination. I've been trying to keep it to hauling him no more than an hour. I've been hauling him every weekend for about 3 months now. Any suggestions? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
