RE: [RC] To Kim - Flax seed grinders - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.Black oil sunflower seeds alone do not wholly replace the fatty acids in flax seed. Flax seeds provide primarily omega-3 fatty acids, while BOSS provides primarily omega-6 fatty acids. Both are beneficial, but omega-3s are harder to come by in natural feeds. Without working out the math, your ratio of 1/4 cup flax seed to 1 cup BOSS is probably pretty good. Is there any benefit to feeding both, or would the boss (black oil sunflower seeds) itself be OK? Thanks, Kathy Kelly Parks AZ And for those folks grinding flax, don't forget to freeze it before grinding...it grinds better and there is less friction damage to the essential oils in the seed. ALSO, a good source of fatty acids in feed are black oil sunflower seeds, whole.
