Re: [RC] [RC] Ponying - Barbara McCrary

I think you have a good point there, something I did not foresee, nor even think about.

netting? Not unless you don't ride near any brush or trees......And a finger trap, or if the ponied horse puts his head on the ponniers butt and rubs once, and his hardwear hooks onto the netting.... My gut feeling is any big mesh could be dangerous to have around a horse.....FWIW

Any one of us who has ponied horses off the one we are riding has experienced the "rope under tail" problem. I have often thought of creating some sort of "rump rug" made of heavy duty netting for the horse being ridden. If this "rug" hangs down far enough.....say down to the bottom of the butt, wouldn't this prevent the rope from getting under his tail? The netting would be very flexible and would adjust to the horse taking a pit stop. I'm thinking something like volleyball netting, or maybe this is too heavy. I can't remember how heavy that kind of netting is. Anyone have a thought about this?

I'll add another little bit of advice here. Just use ONE wrap around the horn, I always have the end I hold "under" the end going to the horse. That way, there's just a bit of a grab, but I can turn it loose quickly in an emergency. I have a dominant, just-a-bit-cranky mare that I pony from. She's great 'cause she doesn't kick, but also won't let the ponied horse get ahead of the saddle without a strong "ears back" reprimand that really keeps them in line.

Next time I'm going to get on my husband's Quarter Horse (we call him
Thunder Butt), put on my old western saddle, take a few dallys around the
horn & show that mare what for! That'll be another story for another day.

I'm just glad I didn't try this on the trail.
