[RC] Scotch and Soda bio - Dot Wiggins

Scot's mama was a QH mare Kitty, that my daughter rode to many wins in speed
events and rail classes and some ctr. Her mama was QH with some TB. Kitty's
sire was an old line hard working ranch type QH from a ranch breeding
program. He was fast and quick enough to be the only horse I ever rode that
could work loose horses like a cuting horse works cows. He could run up so
you could touch any loose runaway.
Won many barrel and pole events.
Scot's daddy was by Royal Bar, direct son of Three Bars, and out of Beaver
Creek mare that went back to Question Mark, a palomino running horse. He
was born in the hills and spent lots of time running out while growing up..
Scot was never meant to remain a stud, but he was so well behaved and low
profile he escaped the knife till there were colts on the ground. We liked
them, nuf said.
He was ridden half a dozen times at 4, maybe a dozen at 5, including at 5
day pack trip. At 6 we brought him out of the mare pasture, rode him
several times and went to the Rodeo parade, got first place mounted entry.
Did two LD rides that fall, (he bucked me off at the first start, a story in
itself) then went to a cowboy for ranch work and roping. In May he did his
first 50, finished the year with 300 miles.
He could have had more top tens, but I was too chicken to let him move out
like he wanted. Didn't think I knew enough to run with the fast horses.
But we could always win any "run for the finish" if it came up.
He was probably the nicest horse I've ever been around, always a gentleman,
always proud, tough, sound to the end, in his twentys. I didn't endurance
him after 16 because he had a son that I wanted to start, Duffy's Tavern.
Scot continued hard ranch work for some years more.
Duffy never got to a 100, but did some 75/80 milers and quite a few 50s top
ten.
His grandaughter, by an Arab, was a very good endurance horse, finshed 5
100's at 7, top tenned all, even if I was unwilling to let her run like she
wanted.
( I'm a conservative rider, we're only going to do what comes easy and
safe.)
It's not so much the BREED of horse, it's conformation, and heart, plus the
right metabolic system. Plus the mix of right rider/horse combo.
And I like Arabs, too. Present mount is a cute little Arab mare that want's
to do 100s.
