You know, I agree with you in principle.... it is just that I know that my horses read the pictures in my mind and I would have to go through some kind of hypnosis to put a very different picture in my mind before having someone shoot one of my horses. Perhaps if it were not my horse, or the horse was in agony and this was the quickest way or somehow there was a way for me to detach myself emotionally, realizing this was for the best, I could go through with it. Unfortunately I am a very visual person and would "see" the action in my mind and I am afraid my horse would pick up my emotions. When I have had to have friends put down, I am sad yet have a picture in my mind of their simply going to sleep and the sadness of my loss--- a little more peaceful, less violent (to me) way to go. This is my shortcoming--- in my mind I know a quick shot and the body--- which is no longer my friend-- being used to feed another animal would be far better. I certainly do not judge others for 
shooting --- just have not the emotional stamina at his point to do that. And yes, burial is expensive, as are vet costs..... Different strokes....
