[RC] kicking - terre

I'm with Dawn:
>So basically, if your mare kicks or threatens to, I'd get after her hard (make it memorable). She needs to learn that you're in charge and that when working, she needs to put her horsey behaviors aside.

..with the emphasis on "threatens to". Most of these problem horses (and they mostly seem to be mares...perhaps protective of their hind ends?) clearly telegraph their intention to kick. THAT is the time to reprimand them, and if you do it the moment you see pinned ears or hear a tail swish, it isn't necessary to do it very "hard"--a loud growl or light smack might do it. You need to deal with the INTENTION, no the actual kick. It's one of those "don't even THINK about it!" things.
