It's called diaphragmatic flutter...or "thumps". It's linked to not enough 
calcium, the body becomes alkaline, the nerve passing over the heart becomes 
hyperactive and when the heart beats it activates the nerve which twitches the 
flank. It's like a red light on the dashboard. It isn't that thumps hurts them, 
it's that what's causing the thumps means things are out of balance.
