[RC] re: [RC] Bits - Ridecamp Guest - rosalie

Hi Sheila -

Ha, yes, she is a lot broader than my arabians. I'm wondering why I
even had a 5 3/4 bit lying around in the first place? This mare is an
old style shuffling Appaloosa (registered as Tiger Horse, but is first
generation breeding stock). Here's a photo of her from my website:
http://tigerhorsefarms.com/pictures/bird_04_200.jpg

She's been going "ok" in her loose ring, but I personally don't like
the possibility of it rubbing, as she has pink skin at the corners of
her mouth and I think it irritates more easily. So as long as I need
to get a little bigger bit, I wanted one that would be "smoother" on
her lips. (I ride my arab in a french link eggbutt and he prefers it
to even riding in a halter!)

Anyhow, I was mostly interested in how the "mechanics" of the various
cheekpieces compared, and I thank you for sharing your knowlege about
the loose rings and eggbutts and full cheeks :-) I may not have
"perfect" hands, but I have gotten "good hands" remarks in clinics
LOL, so I think she'll be safe.
Thanks!

Rosalie

From Sheila Lasone....
Whoa, a 6 inch bit, gotta ask what kind of horse are you riding?
Six inches aside, a loose ring bit shouldn't be pinching the
lips if it fits. I have recently heard a debate about loose vs. egg
butt. A person who sells bits and says she has done
alot of reading about bits says the egg butt is not as forgiving
with imperfect hands as a loose ring. Ok, my dressage instructors
begs to differ and says the opposite <G> I would just try one and see
how it works on your horse. I have my very sensitive mare in a loose
ring and she loves it. My younger horse wasin the same bit (too small
for her) and I switched her to a egg butt french link and so far so
good.

A full cheek snaffle does exert pressure on the outside where the
cheeks are. They are often used in jumping as it helps turn the horse
by putting pressure on the side of the mouth.
