[RC] Light Riding - new definitions - RHONDA LEVINSON

Several I mentioned on a different list that I took my mare on a "light" ride to be sure she was sound after a relatively minor problem. I stated that we went four miles at a mild walk and the mare did great. I was flamed in a BIG way for overriding the horse that way. No horse should be ridden that far when it was "hot" out (about 85), in particular a horse coming back from a problem.

My family on the other hand, thinks that if I return home after only an hour or so, there is a huge problem. LOL. I took my daughter's mare for a short ride when we were just starting her under saddle, and came back after only a few miles. My daughter came rushing out of the house demanding to know what was wrong and why I came back so soon. I laughed and explained the idea of starting a horse slowly. But, it really brought home the difference between "us" distance riders and "them," the pleasure and show riders.
