We continued to leave him unshod in 
the > rear for about 8 months,

I'm curious about this. I know the jumping horse people love to shoe in
front only. I also remember reading a book where an old cowboy shod his
horses only in the rear when he was training them to teach them to be
lighter in front when sore. With that in mind, wouldn't shoeing only the
front  teach a horse to be heavy on the forehand?
