My mare was rearing to avoid moving forward [and also to build up enough momentum to throw her ass over her elbows]. Bridling work in round pen with incentive to move forward [with a professional trainer] has sorted out a lot of those issues.

I discovered that my horse rears in response to pain. The combination of me being too heavy with my hands, at the same time as his saddle causing him pain, made him rear. A new saddle and lessons on how to give more with my hands has cured the problem.
