Having spent a portion of my life on a beta blocker, I hate to shoot down
such a tidy theory, but the truth is that the drug also generally keeps
one from getting the heart rate UP enough to perform any sort of
stupendous athletic feats.  Somehow I can't even begin to imagine a horse
on sufficient doses of beta blockers to impact the recovery rate being
able to run a sub-8 100-miler...
