The more miles you do on a horse in one given day, the more chance of something going wrong. This is why we hold 100 milers to such a high level of respect; they are taking the greatest risk in our sport with their horse.

So ya'll honestly believe that 100 milers are just people who are willing to risk hurting their horses and LD people are riding fewer miles because they're more conscientious?

I really don't think that was what was said. What I read as said was risk increases with distance. That is pretty much a given.I don't know about other people, but I am a hell of a lot more careful if I am riding a 100 than if I am riding a 50 and a hell of a lot more careful riding a 50 than a 25. You can set them up for a failure in 25 miles - but if you stop it won't happen and horse will be fine. You can set them up for a big failure in a 50 - but if you stop at 50 it won't happen and the horse will be fine. If you set them up and keep going, they can crash. If the develop something the last 50 miles they can crash. That's why we see a higher level of metabolic pulls in 100's than shorter distances. That's a fact - a fact we have to live with and deal with.

There are two risk factors in this sport, speed and distance. Cut it or spin it any way you want - you won't change the risk. The risks are what the risks are - independent of what we would like them to be or what ferry tale we would like to hold onto as real.
