RE: [RC] {RC] conditioning and then some fun - heidi

Hmmmm...you must not go to the same rides I do! Nat is correct...and it's
cumulative. A 1,000 lb well conditioned horse with no "manners" is
dangerous to the rider and everyone around them. You can get away without
that training to some extent if you just trail ride, but the behavior of the
horse at a ride start will show everyone whether you have "trained" your
horse or just "conditioned" him.

Indeed such horses are dangerous. And they show up at rides with
considerable regularity.

Additionally, there are those whose manners are sufficient for vet check
lines or for gonig down the trail when there is nothing unusual going
on, but who do not have sufficient training to maneuver or to respond
when the chips are down and something happens. And in my experience, a
large number of endurance horses fall into this category--certainly SOME
training, but not anywhere enough to be considered well-trained horses.

But there are also some very well trained horses out there--they are a
joy, both to ride and to meet in vet lines. And they are a lot easier
on themselves and their riders--so they tend to do better in the sport
as well.
