[RC] 2 for one Special --Acl reconstruction - Christy Adame

Hi All,

Just to put my 2 cents in re: ACL Reconstruction. I am one of those folks who had ACL surgery after the injury-- ~ 18 mos later. This was because I had what they call the "2 for one special", injuring both MCL & ACL. The Doc couldn't reasonably fix the ACL until the stablizing tendon (MCL) had completely healed from a partial tear. I went through a year & a half of grueling physical therapy then had the surgery done by an Orthopedic Surgeon who specializes in Sports related injuries (had many photos on the walls of Olympic atheletes who were patients). Anyway, he didn't use cadaver material, he took a piece from another area on the same leg (I can't even remember where now). Honestly, now it works better than the other knee ! It does bother me after long or difficult rides, but it's better than the alternative. The surgeon said I would never be able to do anything faster than a brisk walk WITHOUT RISK OF FURTHER INJURY or total knee replacement if I didn't have it done. He also told me that if I'm not active (which I am VERY active all the time) that ACL wasn't that big of a deal.

I before the surgery was done, I would do totally normal things like go down steps and I could feel my lower leg sort of "swing" as if it were one of those wooden puppet legs. VERY ODD feeling.
Anyway, I'm glad I had the surgery even if it were 3 yrs of my life I'd like to forget...

Not an expext , but.... get a second opinion, form Dr, at another hospital / facility.
OR Nurse, surgery not to be taken 'lightly' and even if 'arthroscopic' - ones, I am familiar with , they still do 'open' incision; also. If you went two yrs, from initial injury, /// well, just wonder,?? and often times ACL are not ' that' important. depending on what kind activity you are doing. go to orthropedic Dr who specializes in sports medicine. JMHO, ( Go for 'metal cure' as last resort.) Stephanie M
