Re: [RC] Pierce Norton - Tom Sites

Pierce has been found and communication ensues (thanks to MB).  Erica ( i think it was you) wanted more information on a ride that started on 2 Feb-the end of March 1979 from Effingham, Illinois to DC.  Virl did this in the dead of winter and according to Pierces' words..."  the ice dripped from the horses and they found places to stay like was done in the GAHR, one day at a time, and he thinks it was over 1,000 miles."  Pierce and a friend accompanied Virl ,and i assume they are both alive, tho the only thing we have left of Virl is his memory and his legacy, and total devotion to children. Virl carried mail to DC to President Carter.

This ride was planned, organized and promoted by Randy Scheiding, promoter of the GAHR.  I don't know if the Pony Express Classic ever happened  as i was still in recovery in 79 and knew i couldn't go, so didn't follow all the details, tho i did do the OD 100 in 79, thats all i did at the time.

It seems Virl is one of a select few who not only had a history in  AERC, won the GAHR (which was not sanctioned), but also in a very short time be listed as a Historical Long Rider.  www.thelongridersguild

If i can be of any help on your request please let me know.
