==========================================

This week, on HBO's REAL SPORTS with Bryant Gumble, which will air several
times still, there is a comprehensive exploration of hyponatremia in human
marathon athletes. Suggest everyone try to watch it.

Hyponatremia demonstrates many of the same symptoms of dehydration and is
caused by too much fluid intake--salted or elyted or not. An athlete that has
gained 3% or more during a race is likely to be suffering from hyponatremia
while the same athlete losing 3% of body weight is likely to be dehydrated.
Confusion is one symptom that differentiates hyponatremia from dehydration--the
brain is swelling. If a hyponatremic athlete is given more fluids, death can be
the result.
